Kicking off the Holidays

To start the holidays we held a small soiree in the front lobby for First Thursday last week complete with cupcakes, candy and hot cocoa. We also showed off our new interactive window display fireplace. Thanks to Kelly Wright and David Neevel who designed the space and all the WK Elves who helped: Dan Wieden, Joani Wardwell, Kay Zerr, Denise Hanggi, Ademar Matinian, Erin Sorenson, Paul Levy, Christin Spagnoli, Amy Corcoran, Tram Pham, Sarah Hollowood, and our beloved barista Matthew. Special shout out to Heather Harvey's nanny Marlene for the wonderful cupcakes!

Turning Flour into Gold

Last night in the sixth floor kitchen facility, Robin Rosenberg held a bowl of pie crust up to her ear and whispered its secrets for a lucky few. 

Those who enrolled in Food Academy: Pie Workshop Edition walked in as raw shafts of wheat, but emerged as golden seed pods, ready to be ground and bagged. To the entrants in the upcoming W+K Pie Competition: be prepared to get crust fucked. 

Yes, Robin introduced us to a rich world of pie humor, some of it base. If you’re offended take your pie pan and go elsewhere.

In the class, we worked with our heads and hearts, but mostly with our ten organs of sensation, those phalanges that we use every day to do our work, but do we ever really feel with them?

That’s the secret, if you must know. It’s not lard or the buttermilk-to-water ratio. It’s certainly not about putting something crazy in it like cream cheese. It’s how to feel. And that’s something I am proud to say I learned in Robin’s Food Academy.

Halloween 2009

Perhaps Arla said it best in the following email:
I love planning this party more every year! The people that help out with it are AMAZING! I’m so touched by what length’s people go to make this party great.

I mean, DID YOU SEE the Wizard of Oz set up? Or that giant pirate ship?!? Every group that decorated an area, decorated it to the max! And, so many people saved my ass by helping with last minute balloon blowing-upping, color paper hanging, cobwebbing placing, Clifford costume wearing, lunch offering, drink making, and general eager awesomeness!!

I really appreciate all the help and support that you all provided!

And I love how much the kids enjoy it!! When they’re having a complete melt down because they just. don’t. want. TO. LEAVE!!, it touches a little spot in my heart.

You guys are all the best and when I see you, I’m going to hug you. Hard. Real Hard.

Christmas Card Making Machine

Our London office just launched ChristmasCardMakingMachine.com

In addition to the website, an interactive version was installed in the office windows. Two large screens show a variety of Christmas characters. When pedestrians stand near the windows, their pictures are taken and embedded into the card.

Dreary, Weak and Weary.

Halloween 2008 was one of best yet. Reptile man brought a giant King Cobra. Two bouncy castles were setup in the atrium. Wild ponies roamed about and Guitar Hero was a hit outside. Scary W+K employees roamed about eating craploads of candy. Two kids cried their little faces off.
It was great!

Later that night, many W+Kers headed over to the home of our own Margaret and Rob Kendall. For the past 15 years they've been filling their yard with handmade Halloween decorations. This year they had 2,500 trick-or-treaters at their door. Take a look

It's coming...

With 1 week away from Halloween - Studio is busy preparing for the big day. No, W+K doesn't always need alcohol to have a good time. Every year we open our doors to the public and create a spooky playland for the kids to explore. Dressing up is not mandatory, but it is encouraged. Here we find Christin making a Thomas the Tank Engine costume for one lucky child and Cari busy making a monster display. More to come!
