Yan Pei-Ming’s ‘Landscape of Childhood’ By John Jay

The 798 art district of Beijing continues to amaze me. Even during the frenetic construction phase for the forthcoming first Beijing 798 Biennale, there is still enough provocation and stimulation to bring me back on consecutive days, despite the oppressive humidity.

One of the consistent must-sees of this ne plus ultra arts compound is the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA), one of the first major nonprofit art centers in China, founded by Guy and Myriam Ullens. The UCCA is currently showing “Landscape of Childhood,” an exhibition featuring the work of Yan Pei-Ming, a painter who has born in Shanghai in 1960 and has lived in Dijon, France, since the 1980s.

His concern for social conflict and crisis fuels his incendiary ideas, igniting human emotions through monochromatic black and white images. “Landscape of Childhood” is a comment on the overlooked status of endangered children in China. It comprises 34 large flags printed with black and white portraits of such kids, along with some huge canvases mounted on the walls. Steel tubes powered by motors mounted on the ceiling blow wind down on each flag, giving the gallery the sound of an industrial tornado as you walk among the billowing portraits. The effect is of moving through a landscape in a mood of impending crisis.

Wedding and Kennedy Strikes Again

Cupid strikes Wedding+Kennedy. What is this number 37*? Studio designer Christin Spagnoli and Joint editor Matthew Hilber met at W+K Founders Day 25. He asked her her thoughts on cockfights, she thought his name was Corky. Two years later, it’s wedding bliss. Congrats to Christin and Matt!

*Please note: Christin thinks there have been around 37 couples that found their soul mates within the halls of WK globally. Plus or minus 30.

A huuuuge box from the Medicom Toy Corporation showed up today causing quite a stir. Guess the contents and the intended recipient... Hint: His initials are J.J.

 

Robin and Lucy

W+K's Robin Rosenberg is temporarily taking care of Lucy while her owner, director Kelly Reichardt, is gone working on a film.

Lucy recently starred in "Wendy and Lucy" with actress Michelle Williams. The movie was shot here in Portland and was in theaters a few months ago. We highly recommend seeing it. Check out the trailer here.

The movie was Lucy's big-screen break. It's too bad the fame has gone to Lucy's head.

Introducing 12.6

12 year 6 began a few weeks ago. Today the agency officially had the chance to say hello.

W+K Softballsy 2009

Our fearless warriors of the softball diamond are back. The 2009 season is in full swing and the current record is 4-0. The team has already had its fair share of blowouts, tough games, tape-measure home runs, bloody wounds, bad slides, pulled muscles, beers, yelling matches, post-game chicken wings, sunburns, ESPN play-of-the-day moments, bad nicknames, foul/fair ball arguments, double plays, strikeouts, grass stains and overall good old-fashioned ad league co-ed softball fun.

Joe and Driscoll vs. The Volcano

About a month ago the Mount St. Helens Institute invited a couple W+K folks to join a hiking expedition into the crater of Mt. St. Helens. We were lucky to be on the list, no doubt because of our involvement with other local, nature-loving ventures such as Camp Caldera and Oregon Tourism. The crater is typically off limits to hiking so it was a unique opportunity to get a chance to visit this incredible place up close. 

It was great to meet the people working for the Institute and discuss some ideas of how to better share this National Monument with others.

May 18th marks the 20th anniversary of the eruption and it's a perfect time to learn about this incredible volcano right in our own backyard. Be sure to check out their website.
